Writer Profile/Biography: Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay
Sarat chandra Chattopadhyay is a Bengali legendary Novelist of 20 Century. He was born on September 15, 1876 at Debanandapur village in the Hooghly district. He was the second child of his parents. His father’s name was Matilal Chattopadhyay and mother’s name was Bhubanmohini. Sarat grew up in his maternal grandparents’ home at Bhagalpur. His childhood was spent in dire poverty because his father was an idler and paid little attention to sustain his five children. Because of his inability to clear the fees Sarat Chandra failed to appear for the FA final exams. He found a job of a translator or the appellant court cases sent from Bhagalpur to Calcutta but he did not like the too technical side of the job. Sarat decided to try his luck in Burma.Sarat Chandra gained maturity in his writings when the freedom struggle in India was at the peak. He used the medium of novel to depict the exploitative nature of Zamindars. Sarat Chandra’s ideal female characters were modelled as young, pretty widows or frustrated, unloved women from high caste families. His male characters were cast as Devdas, Surendranath, Srikanta or Mahim. It seems that Sarat was personally alarmed by educated, enlightened women. He identified himself with the male characters mainly as narrators who had not much to do, that men are the architect of his own destiny found little mention in his work.
His best novels are Palli Samaj (1916), Charitraheen (1917), Devdas (1917), Nishkriti (1917), Srikanta in four parts (1917, 1918, 1927 and 1933), Griha Daha (1920), Sesh Prasna (1929) and Sesher Parichay published posthumously (1939).
Sarat Chandra was very much influenced by Bankim Chandra’s style and he himself admitted it. However, Sarat detested the Brahmo reform movement and criticized it. Sarat Chandra flourished as an established novelist starting from the days of Badadidi and ended with Biprsdas (1953). He passed away on January 16, 1938 in Park Nursing Home in Calcutta.
